February 16, 2014 was the last day of the elimination round for Season 76 UAAP volleyball. It was a Sunday, and we didn’t really have anywhere to go, we decided to watch at the San Juan Arena. I wanted to see the UP vs. UE game. The Lady Fighting Maroons pulled up a surprising win against the FEU Lady Tamaraws in their previous. UP was 7th in the standings with 2 wins and 11 losses. UE was 8th in the standings having lost all of their games. If they win against UE, it will be their first back to back win in ages.
I’m a fan of Lady Fighting Maroons. Everybody loves the underdog. Very evident that the team has little support. Players even bring their own water jugs unlike other teams that they have coolers and big water containers for the entire team. Sa UP kanya-kanyang baon. I would like to believe that these players don’t get special treatment in class or allowed to under load. Despite the poor support and the difficulty of maintaining their grades, they still train and play for school pride.
UE was a much smaller team than the UP. UP simply dominated the entire game and finished it in three sets. Kathy Bersola was a monster blocker… and the rest of the blockers helped out as well. Team Captain Angeli Araneta was on a firing spree, reminding everyone that she was once one of the top ten scorers of the league in her early playing years. The twin Pagodas of Diliman (Bersola and Araneta) and rest of the team contributed to give UP a back to back win… and gave the fans something to look forward to the next season. Looks like the fight is back in the Lady Fighting Maroons.
Player of the game, Angeli Araneta will graduate from college at the end of the school year… though she is still eligible to play for one more year. Her team mates, alumni, and UP fans are out to convince Araneta to come back for Season 77.
Will this be Araneta’s final game? #onemoreyearneta
